About Nueva Alejandría
An independent education portal about Latin America — how the region learns, told with data, maps and warmth.
Nueva Alejandría takes its name from the great library of the ancient world — a home for knowledge, rebuilt here for one region and one subject: how Latin America educates its people.
We cover the whole arc of learning across twenty countries: the school systems that teach 150 million children, the great public universities that educate millions more tuition-free, the policy debates over inclusion and funding, the scholarships and exchange programs that open doors, and the data that lets us compare it all honestly.
What we believe
That education is the region's most important long-run investment. That access has widened dramatically — adult literacy is high almost everywhere — and that the harder, unfinished work is now about quality, completion and equity. That the story is best told with warmth and rigor together, not one at the expense of the other.
How to read our figures
Education statistics for the region are uneven, and the most honest thing we can do is say so. Literacy, enrolment and attainment figures on this site are approximate, widely-cited estimates drawn from public sources — orders of magnitude, not official precision. Where a number carries a caveat, we print the caveat. Our maps are built from real geographic data, never hand-drawn.
Independent, and plainly so
We are reader-first and independent. Supporters who help keep the lamps on are named openly in the Endowment; they have no say over what we publish. If you would like to get in touch, write to the desk.
